According to the yoga sutras there are four basic aims in life that help us become a "whole" person, one of which is "dharma" - your personal dharma and the ultimate dharma. The ultimate dharma is interesting in terms of the show because it represents the responsibility to that which we all share in common, to a universal common good. While it differs in various political, social, and religious climates, the common thread is the fulfillment of our highest potential as human beings. We must first address our personal dharma, or our personal responsibilities, before we address that of the greater good. In Lost, all the characters grapple with their own personal demons as they try and build a community. Often we see the spiritual realm as an escape from the very real situations of life and thus the sutras taught "as we take care of our responsibilities, we will be taken care of." One small example is as Sawyer reaches out to Jack and begins an extension of himself towards others, people respond in kind.
The tension between Locke and Jack are representative of two extremes: the extreme faith contrasting extreme reason. The logo of Dharma in the hatch is overlaid on a yin-yang like backdrop - which stresses the balance of darkness and light, goodnes and bad, etc.
I don't know where that leaves us, but it's tasty food for thought...

In the podcast you mentioned that Locke saying, "Who are we to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do?" mirrored Jack's flashback, but for me, it also mirrored something that Locke said to Randy, his boss, when he was having a go at him about wanting to go on the Walkabout:
"Just don't tell me what I can't do"
It seems that this, combined with Locke's flashback in Orentation has abviously shaped who Locke is on the island
Not a MAJOR plot point but an interesting slice of character development.

Hurley's podcast appearence mocking theories unwittingly based on production errors, reminds me of the never-ending debate about the smoky monster being visible in the aftermath of the plane crash. Its just debris damnit!
There's many ways the Others could know the survivor's names, like Claire telling them when she was kidnapped. But another way the Others could know is pretty simple: they slink around the jungle shadowing our clumsy group of survivors and hearing every conversation they have. I also think they are responsible for the whispering sounds we've heard at various points in the show, it might be a way to psyche out their prey.
Anyway, another great podcast guys, you are fast becoming my favourite, a nice balance between serious debate and not-so-serious humour. Keep up the good work.

On this podcast, when you were talking about the key around Jack's neck, you said that you guys thought it was so the LostAways remembered that Jack was kinda in charge. My first thought though when I saw the key was,"Oh yeah, we still haven't figured out what that magnetic thing is in the hatch." Because, I'm sure you remember the key being attracted to that wall or whatever it was.

in that picture of "zeke" in the country bears movie there is a car in the back. On the side of the car it says "zeke" I dont know what this means, but its interesting.

I think the flashbacks of this episode are actually going to reveal themselves to be a major plot point in this series.
What if early on in Jack's life his family was told he would be a savior by someone? (Perhaps a religious figure.) Maybe he resented having this to live up to, but the statement stays with him throughout his life.
As Jack grows older he feels as if he is falling short of this prophecy and begins to dismiss the whole idea of predestination or fate. However, once he performs his "miracle" surgery, this idea resurfaces. Perhaps this is why he felt compelled to take on another potential miracle surgery... just in case this prophetic statement had some validity afterall.
After his failure to heal the Frenchman, he loses everything. His heart is hardened more than ever and is our now reluctant leader.
Another quick note, I think Christian's quip about "That's okay for some people, but not you." in reference to crossing the patient/doctor relationship line, could be more of a stab at Jack and the prophecy of greatness. Not sure.
In future episodes I think we'll see Jack fulfilling this prophecy and becoming the hero/savior. If you had to boil this show down to a main character, it's certainly him. Having your main character be unsure of his own abilities is pretty standard stuff.
Just speculation. What do you think?

I hate to push the Dharma button, but Zeke was carrying a luger. Lugers were/are very popular for gun enthusiasts. During the war allied troops, especially americans, were very keen to get a luger as a souvenir. I suppose there is a possibility of a connection between luger toting Zeke and Alvar Hanso, the WWII gun runner.
Was Zeke placed on the island by Hanso himself? Could the "sea-billy" others be related to Dharma? Who knows.

Can I make the comment that white type on a black background sure ain't easy on the eyes. Will you guys change it?
Posted by: Jason | January 23, 2006 at 01:42 PM
No, I like black backgrounds on websites, its soothing on the eyes. For people plugged in like me anyway...
(btw, if its possible I'd like all Lost themed podcasts to have at least 1 'Zeke' hillbilly impression mandatory, I cant explain how much it cracks me up each time I hear it)

HI,
I listened to your Lostcast today, thanks for this great show. Some things made me think: the discussion about the tribes, spys, etc What if Locke is already spying for Zeke's tribe. You guys mentioned it already in your podcast that it was strange that Michael hit Locke. What if it was a setup (mise en scene) of Locke? Perhaps michael showed the first symptoms of the sickness and needed he to be "brought" away. Locke could bring the hunting party to the place he wanted (and discussed with Zeke???) because the others couldn't follow tracks. Admit that Locke is acting a bit weird? Perhaps he met the others already on one of his jungle trips (do you guys remember that scene where Locke is sitting on the hatch and suddenly a light appears from out the hatch -> what happened?). Soit, just some thoughts. When I saw the episode this weekend and we meet some of the others, I thought: ok, now we're gone for some episodes -> tribes, spys, betrayal, wars, who can be trusted, who is a spy -> how many seasons is JJ Abrams' Alias running? ;-)
we 'll see what the future brings he...

Love the podcast...
A few notes:
1. Sawyer is constantly getting conked in the head/hit in just about every episode... He got pinged with the dart in 'Hunting Party' when he challenged Zeke... He got bonked by a rock when he challenged Ana Lucia in the pit... He has been punched, tortured and shot any time he has confronted anyone else... (behavioral conditioning)
2. A lot of the characters work with their parents/siblings, does anyone else see this as weird?
Jack & his dad, Ana Lucia and her mom, Charlie and his brother, Boone and his mom, Jin & Sun's dad... In the other spectrum you have characters dealing with separation from family: Locke, Sawyer, Hurley(Father & Grandfather), Michael, Clare, Shannon, Danielle.

Still thinking about the Zeke development - it seems that since Zeke didn't appear to be very happy the presence of Jack and company on the island, this might rule out the idea that all the survivors serve a purpose or a function in some master plan. That being the case, maybe the only reason the plane was "drawn" to the island was because of Walt, since he's been the only interest to the Others so far (not including Claire and her baby, which is still a confusing mystery).

Don't know if this is already said but there is a thing called the dharma wheel also known as the wheel of life and the symbol for that is like a pirate ship wheel thing kinda resembling the logo for dharma on the island.

Personally I reckon that all the crazy stuff on the Island is a combination of all the experiments by Dharma having gone wrong/broken loose. Zeke the hairy hillbilly and the rest of the others could be the scientists/employees of Dharma who originally were put on the island to look after the experiments
