Neat footage! I know someone posted the first minute and a half of Season 3 on youtube. Reliable? I dunno.

Well said, Kathy.
Is it bad that I spent like 30 minutes incorporating a Lost element into a powerpoint for a grammar lesson I'm teaching tomorrow?! Darn you, Ryan, with your living in Hawaii and seeing Lost already and stuff!

Why the hell isn't it Wednesday yet? Haven't we been waiting long enough?

"Damon Lindelof confirms there is more than 1 group of "Others."
http://abc.go.com/fsp/index.html?channel=Lost"
eh, to be fair, he confirms that there is more than one "faction" within the Others, which I think is a very different thing. and i won't say anything else, as I live in Hawai'i. Except to warn that the cast introduction contains a spoiler and I was sort of mad when it happened so if you are anti-spoiler don't watch any of the YouTubes of the cast intros at the premiere.
Posted by: Cassie | October 03, 2006 at 10:47 PM
Thanks Matt!
1/2 AM in the US means 6:30/7:30 AM here... its much faster to *cough* download during the night here coz usage is less I guess.. so I might have to wait till friday morning to actually see the episode!
Tomorrow is gonna be tough! Will have to stop myself from visiting LostPedia/Wikipedia/ all major news websites to avoid getting any spoilers!
@Cassie: The cast introduction video is posted right here on lostcasts as well! so I think most people here have already seen that... its ok though.. not THAT major a spoiler I think!

happy LOST Day..

Hey you guys!!!
Warning!!! don't read the AOL morning news...they just gave away the whole first miniseries. Boy am I po'd...and I like spoilers. Why would they do that!? Argghhh.
Posted by: I_Love_Sayid | October 04, 2006 at 08:37 AM
ok...I've calmed down. Sorry all. It's a long article and I just got through the 1st couple of paragraphs before I realized what I was reading. Hahaha...it was as if I was a kid again and walked in on my parents.
Anyway, my guess is that the factions are split between those who follow Hanso and the DeGroots and those who follow Mittlewerk. It'll be interresting to see who Fenry's affiliated with.
By the way, I was bummed to miss your skypecast. It's up there with having to work while Appolo bars were being given out down the block. lol You guys sounded like you were having a blast.
Happy Lost Day All!!! :)

Matt Lafferty, you teach English too? Awesome! My kids totally know I'm into LOST and they always want to be the ones to enter the numbers when my Yahoo Widget starts beeping. ;)

Thought you guys might like to see the nice little Lost summary that was posted on Disney's internal website. Don't worry. No spoilers. I just thought it was a good way to sum up the series.
After Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, its survivors were forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive. But they discovered that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, a strange French woman and another group of island residents known as "The Others." The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th-century sailing ship called The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue and bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative, a group of scientific researchers.
In the season premiere episode, "A Tale of Two Cities," Jack, Kate and Sawyer begin to discover what they are up against as prisoners of "The Others."
Posted by: Disney Source | October 04, 2006 at 11:40 AM
Wooooooo!! "Previously on Lost...this is not your island..." ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh teased to the max!!!! I think I might go craaaaaaazzy! Must stay calm for the next 14 hours or so till I can go mad once more watching it.
You guys have to do another skype cast again, cause last time, I set up skype, waited, got distracted, and missed joining in. lol Till next time!

NO SPOILERS JUST THEORY .....
I was just at lunch and a friend and I were discussing "Kate's Choice" which people seem to have assumed is a 'partner' choice. We figure it's not that but is going to be Fenery giving her the choice and it will be that as pay back for killing some of their people one of Sawyer or Jack must die and she has to choose. If she does not choose both will die. This will be the cliff-hanger ending of the miniseries. Of course it will just be a mind game.
Posted by: Mark B | October 04, 2006 at 01:17 PM
Wow Mark B, would'nt that be sedistic... I hope your wrong on that, or at least right that it'll only be a mind game. As much as I dislike Jack, he's essential to the show. haha, I guess this means that I think she'd pick Sawyer to live.
Posted by: I_Love_Sayid | October 04, 2006 at 01:43 PM
Are we there yet?
Mark B - I had those same thoughts. Actually, I thought that might be the cliffhanger at the end of the six eps. That's my pre-seeing anything theory at the moment.
Posted by: Kathy aka Fangirl | October 04, 2006 at 02:06 PM
Mark B - Its possible, but hell I hope not, I dont want Jack or Sawyer to die, but if that did happen, they wouldnt necessarily have to kill one off, I suppose, they could leave it to an escape next half of the season.
Haha im listening to the skype cast now, finally, who ever shouted "we are the survivors of flight 815" is a legend! lol

Take a look at this: (possible minor spoilers about Season 3 and what it contains)
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment/tv/orl-lost06oct04,0,4710724.column?coll=orl-caltvtop
Look at Number 7, just after what it says about Sun. The bit about Charlie. Are they kidding us??? Please not another season of that.
Posted by: Matt | October 04, 2006 at 03:47 PM
Well that's Charlies storyline, if he doesn't have that, what has he got? lol
Posted by: Amy | October 04, 2006 at 03:56 PM
Cassie,
I agree there are "factions" not separate groups. The Others aren't a big happy family. They are a group of self righteous near immortals. Without the natural senescence of the "Old Guard", a ruthless cruel leader would hold power for a very long time. This makes Mark B's idea of "Kates Choice" the equivalent of "Sophie's Choice" all the more plausible. (Pardon my venture into my pet "Kurtzian Theory" of the Others.)
Another thing I discovered was the Chinese Legend of 'Penglai Mountain'. This is a mountain on an island east of China inhabited by immortals. However, nobody can find the island.
Cheers.

Well it is Thursday October 5 already here in Sydney and the excitement is through the roof!
I just checked the website for the local TV station that airs LOST and it is confirmed: "LOST returns in February 2007." Now, I ask you all: can you believe that? Less than 5 months after it airs in the US!!
That 3rd century polynesian raft that they are using to sail the episode tapes across the Pacific must be one of the fastest ever built! And the crew, don't even mention the crew. To think that Disney employees would risk their lives on such a voyage so that we can have our LOST episodes so rapidly - where do they find such people?
This new fangled technology makes me think back to the 'good old days' when it took a whole 2 years for an episode of Star Trek Voyager to air over here. Life was so much simpler in those days, before this 'rush, rush' mentality took hold.
Posted by: Cameron | October 04, 2006 at 05:58 PM
POTENTIAL SPOILER .....
For what it's worth I think she'll pick Jack to live. Hence the kiss with Sawyer in one of the promos is a kiss goodbye not an 'i love you' kiss. Her reasoning will be logical that a Dr. is of more use to them than a con-man. I am willing to bet both live but we are left thinking one is dead over the 13 week hiatus....
POTENTIAL SPOILERS ENDED BACK TO THEORY .....
Could the 'immortality' of the Others be explained by the time moving slower on the island. They are not infact immortal just loner living due to time slowness. For example you stay on the island for 2 years but time has moved only 2 months in the 'real world'. This could explain Joop being so old and Alvar Hanso (who made all his money in WW2 looking about what 60). Flaw with this is -- How come Rousseau has been on the island 16 years -- if time was moving slower she'd have been on the island for many many years. Assuming the 2 months => 2 years real time then 16 years which is 192 months => 192 years real time meaning she was on the island from 1814 (2006 - 192)
Hang on when did the Black Rock 'land' on the island ? Surely not !?!?
If Rousseau was on the island for that long she'd hardly know all about the techno stuff she does. And she does not act like someone from 1814 who thinks it's only 16 years later. Cleary a bozo-theory.
BTW: If anyone cares to check most of my thoeries from season 1 and 2 proved totally off.

Taylor,
Yep, I try to bring Lost into teaching language arts whenever I can--I'm still looking ahead to a month or two from now when I get to do an excerpt from Watership Down!
Cameron,
Ah, your delightful wit! If only Disney/ABC could read it. I simply do not understand how, after a first season airs in Australia, the UK, etc, all parties simply sit down and have a unified roll out--especially since Australia and the UK don't need US shows to be redubbed. Heck, there are practically more Brits and Aussies combined (5 by my count for season 3) on the show than Americans!
Ah, six weeks of episodes... and our beloved LostCasts frenzy!

"Assuming the 2 months => 2 years real time then 16 years which is 192 months => 192 years real time meaning she was on the island from 1814 (2006 - 192)"
after much thought, the time displacement thing is somewhat unlikely, seeing as to how Desmond told the LOSTies that he'd been in the island for three years, and then the creators showing those three years actually pass from when Jack first saw him running up the stadium to finally meeting him on the island.

The Romans conquored by controlling the roads. The English conquored by controlling the seas. The Americans conquored by controlling pop culture and making other countries wait for our television shows. Let us make you a colony and I'm sure we can get you our shows faster. Mwhahahhahahahahaha.

Hey - a little respect please. After all, this is where Flight 815 took off from!
You never know, if it wasn't for us, LOST might very well have been a story about a bunch of people on a bus from Hoboken to Atlantic City that ends up in a truck stop with a flat tire.
In which case, I would REALLY be griping about the 5 month wait for the episodes :)

Would anyone like to volunteer to video call me on Skype and hold their webcam up to the TV set for an hour? Anyone...?
Posted by: Cameron | October 04, 2006 at 08:36 PM
Oooh, I'm the first nerd to run on here after the episode! Some jumbled thoughts: the Hydra is necessarily NOT on the map as it presumably can't be achieved by land. Introducing the Others as uber civilized was a nice twist (though not exactly uber suprising). The plane crash was spectacular. Henry/Ben's urgency at sending Ethan and Goodwin was notable. The fact that he had a plan ready was interesting too. His meal with Kate, and Zeke/Tom calling Henry/Ben (okay, I'm officially calling them Tom and Ben forever and ever now) "him" seems to suggest that indeed Ben is The Him. The comment about the "next two weeks" being tough suggest to me that's the 6 week story arc. The whole bit with Sawyer was interesting... a little comedic, but definitely lots of heartfelt emotion when he saw Kate. Oh, and was is cell buddy the Brazillian actor? He didn't look like much of a Brazillian Tom Cruise! Juliet's dolphin comment ("dolphins too" in the aquarium cell where they're keeping Jack) seemed a bit out of place... one of those "hey, now it makes sense when way back she mentioned dolphins" things.
Overall... lots of questions, and a good start. Good, but not great: not quite the gravitas of the season 2 opener. Not that I'm complaining (and I'm certainly not saying "jump the shark"). It just feels like a slightly odd episode--which is par for the course, I suppose, considering we didn't have castaway beach or the rest of the survivors or anything.
Questions: why three separate "cages" for Jack, Kate, and Sawyer? Who was Sawyer's cell buddy--a disenchanted, formerly civilized Other? Where's the Hydra in relation to the outdoor cages? And what was the Dharma symbol that was visible in the background of Sawyers cage?
Stay Lost!
Posted by: Matt Lafferty | October 04, 2006 at 10:27 PM
bum ba bum!!! what a way to start the episode!!!!
so i thought that jack's dad was totally doing his wife and i started to freak out.... one thing i didn't like about this episode was the fact that we didn't get to see any one from the regular camp... i mean i have been going through serious withdrawl here and i just need to see all the losties not just three... but oh well.. anyone know if they will have the free streaming up at all? because as a nerd, i would like to watch again, just to get all the extra stuff!!
and i thought the symbol looked like an integral sign with a star in the middle (like where the circle goes on a surface integral) but hey... i'm not always the best at seeing things...
CAN'T WAIT FOR THE PODCAST!!!!!!
Posted by: korrinn | October 04, 2006 at 10:41 PM
Wow, good episode!
I actually was a little disappointed with the flashback... i feel like it didn't really reveal a whole lot except to re-display jack's obsessiveness and his crying-abilities.
The opening sequence was awesome! Sadly, I was completely fooled until I saw the plane and even for a second there i thought, "What?? How is the plane over a neighborhood? Oh, nevermind, whoa!" Good stuff.
I was also incredibly excited to finally see the underwater hatch, which I have been waiting for since season one! I agree, Matt, that the dolphin comment seemed a little strange. I thought, during the episode, that Carl was a staged other to try to lure Sawyer into disobedience, but the more i think about it, the less likely it semms. I'm not sure why. Any thoughts?
Did anyone recognize the man who Sarah was with? Did anyone catch which Stephen King book Juliette was reading? Did anyone think that the commercials were kind of over-running the show?
On one final note, over on the fuselage, people have started to call Fenry/Ben 'Benry' now, which I think is an awesome name :)
I'm glad we only have to wait a week now, not another 4 months!
Posted by: Loren | October 04, 2006 at 10:47 PM
some thoughts:
1) confirmation that Dharma is not operational
2) something happened to kate between her breakfast meeting with Ben and her trip to the cage.
3) confirmation of an underwater hatch.
4) two bears have better problem solving skills than sawyer.
two things i noticed.
1) juliet and ben were at one point a couple. there is a tension between them and this will be exacerbated when she eventually falls for jack.
2) the scene when sawyer pushed the button and got shocked was not the same as the one that leaked. I wonder why they changed it.
one last thing:
what is up with special web stuff for american express holders? hope to see that on youtube later.
Gonna sit down and watch it again.
Posted by: Mike in the Box | October 04, 2006 at 10:54 PM
RE: the leaked Sawyer getting shocked scene...
I actually thought that after juliet zapped sawyer he would wake up and go through the motions again and this time for some reason say that guys name (Carl). Then Zeke (Tom) would say something like, ah now he's starting to get it...
Posted by: Mike in the Box | October 04, 2006 at 10:59 PM
heehee. finally.
When i saw this on Saturday my first thought afterwards was, people are not going to like it as much as the opening to Season Two. I mean, I loved it, but to me, the answers we got were answers to questions that only the crazy fans (ahem, like all of us here) were asking- where is the underwater hatch were they keep the sharks, where did they keep the bears, were Ethan and Goodwin working for the same group, etc. I loved that Ben took Kate's naming Sawyer first as a sort of choice, and I think she was brought into that other cage because she named him first.
Also, to go back to the earlier responses to Damon saying there are two factions of Others- okay, if there are, have we seen the second faction? it seems to me that all the others we have seen thus far were part of this community. There are some we didn't see for sure in this episdoe- Mrs. Klugh, Alex, etc., but they were certainly working for Ben. So does this mean that there is some dissention in this group? Or, and this is most likely to me, are Mrs. Klugh and Alex off in another set of hatches working with the Good People- i.e., the children, the Tailies. Therefore, the two "factions" aren't necesarily at odds- they just serve different functions.
Posted by: Cassie | October 04, 2006 at 11:44 PM
I cannot claim any of this as my own, but found these while searching the forums.
RE: the book club.
Bea, the woman from the season finale is at the book club. Not only that, but the book that Juliet so passionately described as her "favorite" book is "Carrie" by Stephen King.
Remember when Locke gives Benry a copy of Bros. Karamazov and Benry says "you don't have any king?"
Here is a link to the pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/mmbox7/bookclub.jpg
Why is "Carrie" significant? it is about a girl with telekinetic powers. Maybe (and this is just speculation) maybe she is reading Jack's mind.
Ok, here is another find:
A screencap of the village.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/mmbox7/village.jpg
A screencap of the Hydra logo as seen from Sawyer's cage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/mmbox7/hydra.jpg
And this one is mine:
RE: The location of Kate, Sawyer and Jack in relation to each other.
Obviously Kate and Sawyer were not very far from each other, could be possible that the locker room where she showered was in the building Sawyer was looking at. Could also be that Jack's "aquarium" was in that building. When Sawyer "escaped" he ran right into Juliet who was leaving Jack's underwater dungeon.
Posted by: Mike in the Box | October 05, 2006 at 04:16 AM
Yeah- the Hydra logo is on the pipes behind Sawyer and also on the door that Jack opens in the hatch. They are all held at the same hatch.
Posted by: Cassie | October 05, 2006 at 04:26 AM
I have no idea whether this was intentional or not but when the Dharma fish came into Sawyer's cage I immediately started laughing hysterically because IT WAS A RED HERRING!
Probably my fave ep, maybe even better than S2 Finale. Why is everyone hating?
Posted by: JoshSpazJosh | October 05, 2006 at 10:22 AM
OK... the opening was awesome! Very cool to see the plane breaking apart in the air, and to see how quickly "Benry" gave orders to Ethan and Goodwin.
However, I really thought that we didn't learn too much from that episode. I wanted to find out more about why they specifically wanted Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. I mean, for a season preimier, none of the cliffhangers were really addressed. I could have used less flashback, and more action on the island. I think that will be coming in the next couple of episodes, though!
Anyway... it's great to have new episodes to look forward to, and new Lostcasts as well!
Posted by: Popmerchant | October 05, 2006 at 10:22 AM
Did anyone else feel a little underwhelmed by the premiere? I thought the first 5 minutes, in Othersville, was the most interesting part of the episode. Maybe the Lost Experience revealed too much of the show's mystery (the point of DHARMA and the numbers) and I was expecting a lot more. Or maybe I'm homesick for the Swan hatch.
My favorite bit from the intro is how Juliet pulled out a CD to play...and back in the season 2 premiere, Desmond pulled out a record. Nice parallel of new vs. old there. :)
Matt: I have a feeling this season is going to follow a 2-week arc. Not just because Henry/Ben said the next two weeks are going to suck...but I heard that season 1 covered 42 days and season 2 covered 23 days. This would mean that season 3 would take place over 16 days (roughly 2 weeks). Unfortunately I can't back this up with a source that states the exact numbers, but it sounds extremely plausible!
Posted by: kitten | October 05, 2006 at 10:49 AM
how did that little woman knock Jack out with that punch?? i dont think so!!!
Posted by: SMOKE MONSTER | October 05, 2006 at 10:49 AM
Ooh, I do have one other thing to add.
When Jack heard the static through the "Communicate" intercom, and he suddenly heard his father's voice say "Let it go, Jack," Juliet said that the intercom had been broken for years.
The first thing I thought of was the smoke monster. I thought of the recent talk about how we've seen it more times than we think, and that it could possibly have taken the forms of Jack's dad, the black horse, etc by analyzing people's memories or whatever and manifesting itself as these people/things from their past. Maybe, since the intercom is allegedly "broken," the smoke monster manifested itself as a sort of soundbyte from Jack's life -- similar to the theories about the whispers in the jungle? -- and manipulated the broken intercom to make it seem as though it worked.
But it's just a theory, of course. :) I admit it would sound utterly ridiculous if not for all the background chatter about the smoke monster being seen more than we think.
