Supposed to be a slower episode. On the other hand, supposed to have some creepy Ben scenes between Juliet and Ben. We shall see...

Oh yeah! Third! Juliet is so f*ing hot!
Posted by: Big Daddy | March 06, 2008 at 08:22 PM
Not a bad episode...Not as much drama, but more information. This is definitely the best season so far.
Nice to know that Dr. Burke has two tickets to the gun show!!
Posted by: RobC | March 06, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Definitely lower key than the other episodes this season. No true "whoa!" moments for me, and Kate CONTINUES the dumb-move-of-the-week-why-do-they-keep-giving-her-a-gun streak she's got going. I swear, if she didn't look so hot... We got some kinda interesting connect-the-dots moments, though my wife and I wondered if all the loose ends will be tied up by the series' end at this rate.
By the way, read into this what you will: behind the painting, Locke initially pulls out the ONLY contents of the safe: the "RED SOX" video tape. After watching it, Ben goes back to the safe, and pulls out the Widmore file -- a very thick Widmore file. Unless that was a glaring production error, Ben conjured that sucker out of thin air (and may be related to Ben's "imagine that, on this island, there is a box, in which anything you could imagine would appear inside it" to Locke before John blows up the submarine.
Funniest line of the show: "the rabbit didn't have a number on it, did it?"
Posted by: Rok | March 06, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Not sure what this epi was trying to convey. Why didn't Daniel and Charlotte just explain what they had to do? Why all of this sneaking away, beating Kate, beating Juliet...why not just say "Ya know what guys? Ben has a stockpile of toxic nerve gas on a part of the island you STILL haven't discovered and we would like to stop him from using it on everyone." That wasn't even the interesting part of the story. There should have been more Locke and Ben interaction. And poor Juliet and Goodwin? Real stand up guy. He cheats on his wife (albeit a creepy wife) and then snaps the neck of a Tailie while undercover. I don't get it. Kidnap the kids because they're better off with "us" but kill some guy who just survived a freaking plane crash.
Posted by: xobster | March 07, 2008 at 12:03 AM
The tape was not the only contents of the safe. I thought that at first too, but if you look more closely you can clearly see that the tape is sitting on top of a white pile of paper that makes up the file folder.

Definitely not as good or even close to the last episode, but.......
At least we found out at least ONE use of the gas masks.... to save the Freighties lungs in case they didn't properly disable the gas machine.
So, in prior episodes, Daniel said they were here to rescue them, then Daniel said that rescuing them was not their primary mission, then Daniel's bag of gas masks opened up, then Kate opened up the bag of gas masks and got smacked on the head, and then the gas-masks were used by Daniel and Charlotte to protect themselves while they dis-armed the gas machine.
So are the gas-masks needed for future plans? Are they going to gas the island? Or are they simply there to get Ben, like Miles originally said? I think they are done with the gas masks unless Ben has something he can release.
Also, Ben telling Locke that the man on the boat is someone he never would have thought of. If it turns out to be Michael, who else would he have thought of? Why wouldn't they think Michael is on the boat? From a Lostie perspective, do they think Michael is totally gone and has sailed home?
And Locke let Ben go free? He did get some good info, but Locke now looks like the doubted, whimpy leader that Ben described earlier in the show, right after Locke was questioned by Claire about how Miles was being treated. Locke doesn't learn. Sawyer and Hurley were not very happy to see Ben walking free with a big smile on his face after all he's done to them. (Had the living **** beat out of Sawyer and almost killed Hurley on the beach.) Locke may have the right ideas of what is going on with the island, but he's going to lose his following. They won't go back to Ben, but they probably will go back to Jack once they find out about the dis-armed gas machine.
Anyways.......so-so epsiode, especially after last weeks 10+.

This show is getting gooooood.
A few things...
1) Seems that Ben aka Island aka Dharma's old crew were againt Widmore. Kinda a good vs evil thing going on there and Widmore is the evil one, at least from what we know and Penny isnt in on that...
2) I mentioned a while back that it seems that Ben controls Smoky. He does. Smoky comes to help Juliet in the from of that Shink.. Goodwin's wife. Also explains why since Bens been around, Smoky's been laying low.
3)Ben has some kind of master plan, again, and is playing Locke. It looks so easy to get Locke to do whatever Ben wants.
4) Seems that Faraday and Charolette want to disable Ben's main defense of the island, the gas. They know about the Purge and want to make sure when they invade the island, he cant gas them.
5) How'd the Widmore people find out about the island, the map, etc? From the journal from the Black Rock? Or could Rouso be part of them?

oh ya... I think Michael is the mole on the ship, makes too much sense if he was, so he's the guy on the ship
Posted by: spalz | March 07, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Two questions:
Did anyone else see a shadowy figure in the background of the Ben-Locke scene when they were discussing Charles Widmore?
Is Harold Perrineau always in the opening credits?
Posted by: A | March 07, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Mole on the ship.
it's Libby. It would be just like lost to say "I have a MAN on their ship" and be referring to a woman.
Plus in the credits for "meet Kevin Johnson" Cynthia Watros shows up and the recap says that Sayid confronts ben's spy.
my money's on Libby - which is crazy

The Widmore reveal seemed a bit too obvious for LOST. Whichever side turns out to be white or black, it just seems a little straightforward. As Ben eagerly gave up his safe combination I couldn’t help but think of the magic box – the box that contains whatever it is you imagine being in there. It sure seemed convenient that Ben had an incriminating tape and a neatly organized file – and that’s it – in that safe (box). Just as it seemed convenient Ben came up with a tape of Juliet’s niece on a swing-set when he needed to persuade her to stay, or came up with a tape of the Red Sox to convince Jack to do his operation. Makes me wonder just how many times Ben has ‘taped over’ stuff.

I can't understand why how many people on certain boards rate this pretty low. Granted it didn't give us lost nerds a meaty dose of new info but as far as television goes it was a well paced, finely acted and highly enjoyable 40 minutes.
I really enjoyed it. 8/10 for me.
Also, good to see more Juliet and Jack action.
Posted by: Denny | March 07, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Oh, yeah, definitely creepy about Ben and his assumption that Juliette is his. *shudder*
IMDB shows Harold Perrineau as being on LOST from 2004 to 2008, so Michael must be back!
As for Faraday and Charlotte not saying what their real intent was, they probably don't know who to trust, and also probably thought that Jack & company were actually on Ben's side but just pretending to be against him.
Oh, and LOCKE! Someone needs to smack him in the back of his head for letting Ben have free run of the compound! Surely he must know that Ben is only being cooperative because he's got something planned.
Don't most safes have a door that is smaller in size than the inside of the safe? My guess is that there was enough room for the rather thick folder to be sitting between the bottom of the safe and the door sill.
Btw, is anybody else irritated that Charlie didn't even try to swim out through the hole made by Mikhail's grenade? (It was a grenade, wasn't it? Been so long, I can't really remember)
Posted by: Cynthia | March 07, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Also Scott, Please don't post possible spoilers about who shows up in next week. I want to be surprised. ;_;;
Posted by: Denny | March 07, 2008 at 11:04 AM
@ jacob is walt: How could Ben's magic box be the safe? Don't forget that Locke's father came out of Ben's magic box.
Posted by: Cynthia | March 07, 2008 at 11:14 AM
I thought that was a great episode, great to hear "the whispers" again!
Posted by: alan | March 07, 2008 at 12:51 PM
I think Ben's magic box is simply a metaphor. I do not know how he does it, but Ben can get off the island and he can find people. He can not just start telling people that he can get off the island anytime he wants. There must be another reason why he needs to get off the island.
Good episode. Lots of information. I think Harper is dead and coming back as Smoky. Jack was able to see her, but then she just dissappears.
Whispers...
Posted by: Gerald | March 07, 2008 at 01:26 PM
When will we see a Rouso back story.
I wonder if the others used the tempest to gas her people.
Is Rouso connected with Whitmore? seems like everyone is
connected to everyone.
Posted by: oddjob | March 07, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Has anyone been able to find a transcript of the whispers yet because they are usually pretty interesting?
Good episode, quite alot was subtly revealed.
Ben is clearly hugely important to the LOST story but he is also crazy as hell! Can anyone remember the relationship between the hanso foundation/DHARMA and Widmore and his group? I'm a little hazy on the topic but i reckon that ben and the natives of the island are trying to keep outisders from interfering with it. Thats why they gased the DHARMA people and why they are trying to keep widmore's freightees off the island. The writers seem to be suggesting widmore is a bad guy BUT as is always the way with LOST this may not actually be the case, i foresee a big twist where widmore is in some way good and the natives/ben bad.
I do think ben and smokey are connected, either he controls the smoke or the smoke's (jacob's?) interests are the same as his.
I really hope the writers can answer all of our questions before the end of LOST!
Posted by: LostFanUK | March 07, 2008 at 03:56 PM
Whispers, maps, randomly appearing people, DHARMA stations. Yep, Lost as usual.
Ben remains my favourite TV villain.
Screencap of Faraday's map if possible, guys.
Posted by: Cihan | March 07, 2008 at 04:35 PM
OK, if we're going to go crazy here let's go for Charlie being Ben's man on the boat.
Posted by: Steve | March 07, 2008 at 05:24 PM
I think Ben is his own man on the boat.
Ok, seriously the first character that popped in my head in that scene...was Boone. Yeah, I know.
Posted by: Cihan | March 07, 2008 at 06:53 PM
Yes, no spoilers please.
Harold Perrineau has been in the credits all year.

and i wonder if the gas thing finally answers some of the mystery around Kelvin's bio-suit, the injections, and the quarantine that Desmond was afraid of.

I wasn't a big fan of this episode. After "The Constant" it had some big shoes to fill and it couldn't do it. It was nice to get filled in on Juliet's time as an Other before it all hit the fan. However, we kinda knew most of this already. We knew Juliet had been seeing Goodwin, and we knew Ben ordered him on a suicide mission. The only thing we didn't know was that Goodwin was married, but why not tell us that back in season one unless Harper was a recent contrivance to facilitate extra melodrama?
I think Lewis has a thing for Faraday. That seemed how the actress was playing the scene at the brook. She may even be his minder. Notice that they purposefully didn't show us the face of the woman with Faraday in his introductory flashback. Lewis probably knows that Kate's a murderer, and since she's been shot at and held hostage in the past day or two, no wonder she's a little violent prone at the moment. I fear some people will stop liking Lewis because of this, but it only stands to reason. She obviously feels like a cornered rat, and who wouldn't?
Claire's scene seemed superfluous and out of character on multiple levels. First, I don't find she'd be so flippant about Charlie's last words. Second, why does she want to go interrogate Frieghties when she has a child to oversee? Third, why blatantly compare Locke's behavior to that of the Hostiles to his face, if she was actually trying to politely convince him to a less hostile way? She seemed to shoot herself in the foot with trying to offer a calmer alternative when she's obviously not good at it. Perhaps the writers just can't get a feel for Claire's voice. They never seem very good at finding anything valuable for her to say. Damn shame. Great actress there, being given poor dialogue and zero action.
Who is Ben's mole on the boat? It has to be someone Locke knows. Someone who would make Ben say "you oughtta sit down first." Either Walt or Michael would fit that bill nicely. Yes a list of other possibilities could be made, but what'd be the point of it being anyone else?
I don't think Ben is evil, exactly. He's a person with weaknesses who has a very powerful thing at his disposal. Power corrupts. Really he's just a lonely person who's trying to do right by the Island. I think of him more like Malcolm Reynolds in Joss Whedon's Firefly: the Island is Ben's 'ride' so to speak. He wants to protect it, and keep it flying, by any means necessary. There is however a line that Reynolds never crossed with Inara, that Ben did cross with Juliet. Mal would never demand Inara be his property, which is why he let her go. However, both men refused to compromise. Mal simply went without, while Ben tried desperately to claim ownership. Mal and Ben are very much alike, but Mal has boundaries that make him more noble, while Ben's just sad and desperate and lonely.
Rousseau's back story will probably not happen until early in season five, but then they keep pushing that back. It's potentially a powerful tale. The producers may be afraid they can't do it justice.
Not all the questions on the Island will be answered by series' end. These writers are great prestidigitators, and as any magician will tell you, always leave them wanting more.

"It's not easy being an other, Jack."
- Juliet
I really liked this ep. Very well written. Sometimes LOST makes me cringe with the cheezy writing and plot points, but this one was light and fun and moved really well. It had a sense of humor! LOST is generally a pretty humorless show, but this ep was genuinely funny. There were a few great nods to the fans -- taping over the Red Sox tape, asking whether the rabbit had a number on it, etc.
And the ending was hilarious. Just when you were expecting a cliffhanger reveal, they cut to Hurley and Sawyer who see Ben walking with his laundry... music builds and... CUT! The writers were totally having fun with us, playing on our expectations. Great stuff.

Whooa...! For a minute there I thought Jack,Kate and Julliette where going to have a fuckfest right there in the riverbed. How good would that have been with Jack just plunging his member from one to the other with a bit of arse to mouth action too.

how about Mikel, being the man on the boat, we havnt a clue were he went after he flooded the looking glass with the grenade..

Perhaps Jacob is Smoky's formal name....

I don't care how annoying season 3 was with all the romance plots. Ben and Juliette is a hell of an interesting affair and it ties RIGHT into season 2. Kudos to the writers for making LOST intriguing again.

Why the fuck would Loche have money in his pocket to give to Ben to get him started with saving. If is on an island for fuck sake....And has not been near a shop in over 3 months.

I know this is not appropriate but I must say that I really really want to give Tasha a poke.As well as her doing that cute giggle while I give her a facial. Arrrrgghh
Posted by: alan | March 08, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Ben's "man on the boat" can only be Walt. Michael is a good guess - but how would he communicate with Ben? The only person who could convey a message to Ben from the freighter without arousing the suspicion of the other freighties is Walt, via Jacob.
Overall, a decent episode, but as has already been said, didn't quite live up to the standard set by "The Constant." Definitely a very strong season so far, though.

@ fake alan,
I have learned that vulgarity for it's own sake is pathetic. Maybe I should blame it on the box of wine in my frig. My mom says I need to get out more and meet real people. My world currently revolves around TV and internet porn. Maybe my mom is right.
So, "alan" take it from me, take a break from the forums and throw the wine box away.

Interesting theory we have. We have come to the conclusion that Kate is going to end up with Ben. It will likely be a relationship formed out of some form of deal or blackmail or something. The reason being: the woman Ben truly loved (Juliet) favored Jack. So, Ben makes it his goal to take the woman that Jack loves (Kate) away from him by hook or by crook.
Posted by: mrmnjewel | March 09, 2008 at 01:15 PM
lol. good point, the one with locke having his dollar in the pocket. seems like he didn't do his laundry since he got to the island... i agree with you guys above, well written ep. season 4 shows us so far that the lost creators team is in its best form. hope it'll stay that way.
also, it's great to see that some of those old theories from lost fan forums are making it on screen, like mr. widmore beeing the big bad guy. not that we didn's see that one coming, but finally it's a confirmation not only pure guess. nice.

To the person (people (everyone)) who thinks charlie shoudl have swam out. Desmond said that for Claire to be saved, Charlie had to die there. Charlie knew he had to die for Claire to be saved, so he didnt swim out because of that.
