Trying to figure out who the candidates are? It may be easier than you think. Why did some people disappear off the plane and others didn't? I think that puts our candidates that are left being : Jin, Jack, Hurley, Sawyer, Kate, and possibly Loche since he is the substitute.

The reason Ben and Widmore can't kill each other is because they are both Others. Remember that Juliet got marked because of it. And the conversation between Ben and Widmore was before we learned Widmore was an Other which is why that was so confusing back them but now we know why they can't.

I was just listening the first podcast from this season and you were talking about "the original list" of the people Michael needed to get to get his son back. Jack propably was in the list but it wasn't the original list IMO. Someone said "Why did you bring him here, he wasn't even in the list". If Smokey made the list, it would be obvious that a surgeon wouldn't be on his list but a con man and a fugitive would be. Am I making any sence? Propably not....

I think that given the time flashes, Widmore discovered Ben would kill Jacob. That is why Widmore has been a former other in opposition to the others, or more accurately Ben.
Ben and Widmore probably could not kill each other since they were candidates. (Did anyone make out if Widmore was a candidate?)
Widmore sent teams to kill everyone on the island because he does not trust Ben and therefore the others anymore. And if he knew about Smokey animating bodies, then he would want total wipe out so he does not have to figure out by torturing each person who is Locke-ness monser.
When Ben killed Locke, he killed a candidate - breaking the rules, and then able to kill Jacob. Hence why enforcing the rules is important. And also why the Locke-ness Monster is very careful to keep his people in line.
Just my thoughts.

Listening to the podcast right now. We don't have confirmation that Sun killed her bald lover, but we did see Sun shoot "Other" Colleen in "The Glass Ballerina" in Season 3. I would say that was in "cold blood", or maybe self defense...does the island care?
