Richard tells Locke he has to die because Flocke(aka MIB) tells Richard to say that. It did not come from Jacob.

Also, Roberts idea about Jack was wrong. The real story is that Jack was originally scripted to die in the pilot, but that was changed before the pilot was shot, obviously. It had nothing to do with the popularity of the character, and they did not plan for Jack to die later in S1.

The Black Rock was first seen in the season one finale. They went there to get the dynamite to blow the hatch door.

Not sure about the priest being MIB, Priests wear black all the time (and should be hanging their heads in shame right now) and a Priest would have been present at a potential execution for sure.
Also why was Richard delivering messages for MIB telling Locke he had to die if he worked for Jacob?

At the time he thought that Flocke was Locke and not MIB, so to Richard, he was doing what the leader of the others told him to do.

smokie = trapped in LOCKE's body now. jake will take over as the replacement for Jacob... Jack & Locke will be locked in a struggle as nemesis for each other forever... Jack taking over as the "jailer" --- the show ends with this.... just a theory

Just a little more info on Jack in the pilot. apb is right on -- Jack was supposed to die in the pilot, but that changed. Michael Keaton was originally slated to play Jack, but he wanted out when it was decided to not kill off the character; Keaton didn't want to be tied down to a series.
Just a thought, but metaphorically, MIB breaking the bottle reminded of me of the H-Bomb (eventually) sinking the island.
One big question: how is Richard not more suspicious of Locke/MIB at first? Was Richard unaware of MIB's ability to mimic dead people? Dogen sure knew; seems like Richard would've, too, and sniffed out MIB before Jacob was killed.

Can you please link to the spoiler you mentioned at the end of this podcast? Some of us want the spoilers.
Thank you.

Guys, talking about explaining Lost to someone who's never seen it, surely you've seen these:

@Noah, here's a link I found through that has a list of major spoilers for the next few episodes. Caution to all...I really discourage reading this because it has definitely ruined my excitement/anticipation for the next few episodes and I really regret it. But since someone here asked, I figured I would share (I know sometimes we can't help ourselves). Here you go:

If you click on "Are You Really Sure", it leads you to the document with the different sources providing their opinions on episodes 6.10-6.16.

I came to post about Fake Locke telling Richard to tell time-traveling Locke he had to die, and that Jack was originally going to die in the pilot. Obviously apb beat me to it! :)

I don't think the guys are watching the show carefully anymore. It's become a casual fan podcast. Nothing wrong with that.
Posted by: apb | March 30, 2010 at 08:03 PM
at the time Richard told him he had to die Locke was Locke not Flocke wasn't he? i'm so bloody confused
Posted by: Paddy | March 31, 2010 at 12:52 PM
Yeah, the whole Richard Alpert issue with Locke as the 'chosen one who must die' was manufactured by the 'Locke-ness monster/man in black' manipulating Locke during the time flashes.

of course Christian Shepherd, but Richard also told Locke he had to die when he gave him the compass, was he working for Christian / MIB
Posted by: Paddy | March 31, 2010 at 01:05 PM
The compass is my favorite element of the show - the item that never existed! Locke gave it to Richard in the past who then gave it to Locke in the future in a time loop. It never got created or destroyed.

Hey, thats totally Lost. My head hurts
Posted by: Paddy | March 31, 2010 at 05:26 PM
MIB (in the form of Locke) takes Richard to Yemi's plane, and tells him to tell Locke (the real one) that he has to die. Thus, MIB assures that his plan to take the form of Locke goes through.
