Great episode. Can't wait for the podcast. Does anyone know why Desmond said he had a son called Charlie? In the other timeline he does; but in this timeline he has only been on one date with Penny to a coffee shop. I would have thought that is not enough time even to get to second base!!?? Was it just quick thinking to cover up why he was there, or have the timelines already started to mingle in more substantial ways than just a few flashes?

Very entertaining episode! IMO, Desmond is now sharing the same consciousness across both universes and thus has knowledge about both his lives. The reason he ran his car through Locke wasn't cause he was seeking revenge however, as some have theorized. I think he just wanted to put Locke through a near-death experience, specifically one that happened to him in his previous life (they used the SAME shot of Locke lying on the ground with a bloody head as they did when he fell 8 floors). Like Charlie recreated the underwater situation for Desmond's sake.

Maybe it´s time to just stop podcasting guys. You were so much better before when you actually cared.

Cameron, I think he just had to pull a name out of a hat quickly when questioned by Ben, and said Charlie since he just had an interaction with someone named Charlie. Of course, there is the possibility that he's gaining more memory of the other timeline and actually does remember his son't name. Guess we'll find out eventually.
Kunal, I agree with you re: Desmond's intent. Revenge is just too easy an explanation. It appears there are two ways to "see" the other side: near-death experience, and a realization of true love. If Desmond can't make one work easily, he tries the other. Then again, Locke's already found true love and hasn't seen, so maybe Desmond sees him as a lost cause.
Sam, thanks for your terrible spelling and equally awful grammar, plus your resentment at free content. Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

By the way, if anyone's wondering, Lost has already proven that the island has some of the softest drops-down-a-hole in television history (see also: Juliet, Locke), so don't bet for a second that Desmond's dead. Maybe some severe broken bones, but not dead.

Sam, This websites not finished with you yet.

Paddy FTW!
so is desmond operating under the expectation that one can glimpse the "other side" through A) love -- i.e. penny & him, hurley & libby, dan & charlotte and B) near death? him underwater with charlie, charlie in the plane... is that why he hit locke with the car?

are widmore and hawking able to exist simultainously in both universes and are they training desmond to do the same

We clearly heard a splash when Flocke threw the torch down the well, so I think Des will be fine. In fact he may be exactly where he needs to be - near an EM pocket.
As for the soft-drops, Locke was gonna die or was already dead when he fell out that window but Jacob touched him and he seemed to revive. And Juliet did indeed die due to the fall eventually. Notice her movements when she hits the bomb 8 times, she's clearly paralyzed from the waist down. Remember the bomb did not go off in the original timeline. The EM energy from the "incident" sent all the Losties back to where they belong - 2007.
Also, besides true love and near-death, there's another way to "feel" another life, and that's EM like from Widmore's test cabin and the MRI scan. But this applies to Desmond only ofcourse.

Soft-drops for sure. Let's not forget dropping from a broken-in-two airliner in mid flight!!!!
Posted by: Cameron | April 16, 2010 at 07:08 AM
In that case, let's not forget a monster made of smoke, an island that disappears and so on and so forth.

The book that Hurley picks up and examines in the episode “Everybody Loves Hurley” is “Notes from Underground” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It is available as a free Amazon Kindle download at http://www.amazon.com/Notes-from-the-Underground-ebook/dp/B002RKSXH8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=digital-text&qid=1271262370&sr=1-1

Actually, Kunal, the drop I was referring to was the one with Locke being lowered down by Sawyer during the flashes and he drop down, resulting in a severe compound fracture, but again, no death. But thanks for the reminder of the drop, what, seven stories or something like that? But we're going to say Jacob's direct influence throws that out. But, seriously, Juliet managed to make it clear into the NEXT SEASON despite being dragged down into that mine shaft (or whatever you call it) and trapped inside an imploded hatch station. My wife and I were like "what the hell does it take to DIE from a fall in this show?" I mean, we're just joking, of course, and yes, sure, we're talking major suspension-of-disbelief in a show like this with ghosts and smoke monsters and time travel. But I can't help but be amused at how they're trying to embed it somewhat in reality (otherwise they wouldn't even bother with the physics stuff), you'd think someone would just outright die from a long drop. ;-) I just find it funny.

Ah, I can think of one deadly fall: Sun's guy-on-the-side. That was what, 20-ish stories onto a car? Yep, dead.
Of course, the island's still-unexplained healing abilities may account for all of these non-fatal falls. Hell, I've put too much thought into this already.

Did you guys actually podcast today? Where is the link?
Posted by: Midge | April 17, 2010 at 09:51 PM
Midge - from the looks of the stats on the Ustream page, there was certainly no video podcast yesterday.
Hopefully the podcast will appear at some point today.

Oh no, No podcast!!!

Come to think of it, did we ever get a final story on why that guy Sun was seeing fell to his death? At this point, it would seem daddy found out about him, and sent Keamy (or similar thugs) to take care of him, which would make sense.
Posted by: Rock | April 18, 2010 at 10:56 AM
I'm not sure Sun's dad would send Jin to sort him out and then send Keamey afterwards to finish the job so soon. More likely that he jumped from the shame of being found out.

Wheres the podcast? please please please....
Posted by: mike g | April 18, 2010 at 01:19 PM
Elaine, he might have not trusted Jin to do the job (this other timeline shows he found out about Jin anyway, pre-LA flight), but this might be such a minor mystery that the writers will never fully clarify, which is fine. Either story works.
